I’ve been styling a lot of summer looks for a couple of months now on TV and in my personal styling jobs and I’ve been earmarking pieces that I think make up summer wardrobe essentials. Sometimes I question whether it’s worth actually buying summer things since I wear them for such a small percentage of the year. But when the sun comes out I do wish I had some pieces that reflect the mood of the season.
When shopping for summer wardrobe essentials I have a few pointers. Buy things that are classic and that you can put away when summer is over and take out again next year without any doubt that they can still be worn. Then you can pick up a few trend led pieces to style in amongst those. Things like white jeans, light jackets and cotton basics will take you anywhere. For dresses, which are always a must, vary up your styles and patterns. There’s no need for four bardot-style floral dresses in your wardrobe. Try some stripes, bright colours and some lace for a summery effect.
I love to mix and match so tops are my go-to. I am having an obsession with polka dots right now, as well as new season shades like mustard. This works really well with white jeans and any denim really.
My shoe investment this year is going to be tan block heel sandals. And I have spotted some in Dune which I plan on trying on this weekend. I reckon they are a cooler take on the basic nude shoe which I’m a bit sick of at this point. I think we can step it up in the shoe department if you know what I mean. And if you are seeking shoe inspo I have an edit of my shoes of the season coming up on Xposé next week! Below is a little lookbook of some of my favourite pieces to add your shopping list.
